Whether or not you’ll receive a refund when canceling an American Airlines flight depends on the fare type you booked. Refundable tickets are eligible for a full refund upon cancellation, while non-refundable tickets generally are not. For non-refundable tickets, American Airlines will often issue a travel credit rather than a cash refund, which you can use toward future travel. The 24-hour rule also comes into play—if you cancel any ticket within 24 hours of booking, you'll receive a full refund, provided the ticket was purchased at least two days before the departure date.
To cancel and request a refund, log in to your account, find your upcoming trip, and select the option to cancel. Double-check your fare type to ensure you understand what refund or credit you’re entitled to.
